GC Murmu resigns as Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor:AIR

The first Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, G C Murmu, resigned from his post on August 5, the first anniversary of the scrapping of Article 370, All India Radio reported.

As per sources added that Murmu is set to be the next Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) taking over from Rajiv Mehrishi, who will retire this week.

Murmu, a 1985-batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre, was appointed as the first L-G of Jammu and Kashmir last October after the formation of the new Union Territory under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.
The two Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh came into existence on October 31 after the Narendra Modi government abrogated provisions of Article 370 that granted a special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the state into two UTs.
Sources said that Murmu resigned this evening after he was sounded that he might have to step into the shoes of CAG, or he may get some other comfortable and respectable position at the Centre.
“He has resigned, and he will be adjusted in some top position at the Centre. He has been sounded about it,” a source said without revealing more details.
There is a speculation that former Union Home Secretary Rajiv Maharishi may be the new LG of Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier on Wednesday, Army commander of Northern Command had called on Murmu and discussed the overall security management of the Union Territory.
