Drug addiction: A grave concern

When you are addicted to drugs, nothing else matters in life and all you think about is the next high

The Holy Qur’an is reticent regarding drug use, although it discusses intoxicants (khamr) and, more specifically, alcohol. Any discussion on narcotics and addictions must start from the Holy Qur’an, since it is the foundation of Islamic law, ethics, and theology. Alcohol is prohibited in the Holy Qur’an for recreational reasons; the Qur’an calls alcohol the “Handiwork of Satan” ([15], al-Ma’ida 5:90); Prior to being forbidden by divine decree through a Qur’anic revelation. It was gradually forbidden in three phases [16], with the final prohibition being revealed in the fifth hijri (ca. 627 CE) after the siege of Medina, nearly seventeen years after the inception of Islam.

Drug abuse means life abuse, now a day’s is common saying among people across India. Have we ever thought, why? Drug abuse or substantial abuse Firstly starts effecting nervous system of a living being meaning thereby it makes man nonsense though he adopts stupidity and insanity. Secondly, everything is affected. Relationships are torn apart and families are heart-broken. Drug addiction impacts job productivity and can lead to job loss and financial hardships. When you are addicted to drugs, nothing else matters in life and all you think about is the next high. Responsibilities and important events are forgotten and the activities you once enjoyed are no longer relevant.

The brain controls all functions of the body such as walking, talking, thinking, and feeling. The brain also controls the organs in your body. When you use drugs, your brain’s communication to your body is disrupted. The brain’s neurotransmitters are responsible for delivering messages throughout your body. When you use drugs, your brain becomes physically dependent on the drugs to function. Withdrawal symptoms from drugs make you severely sick and your risk of relapse drastically increases.

Drugs affect your physical, emotional, and mental health. Drug use causes heart complications and can result in cardiac arrest or heart disease. Drugs affect your breathing and can lead to serious lung infections. When you use drugs, you heighten the possibility of irreversible brain damage. Other health problems include depression, anxiety, seizures, overdose, and death.

Relationships with family and friends are affected by drug addiction. Drug abuse can cause a range of emotions and moods. When you use drugs, you may become irritable, withdrawn, antisocial, or aggressive. Drug addiction interrupts normal sleep patterns and can cause insomnia. Depending on what drug is used, drugs can cause dramatic weight loss and decrease your appetite.

Drug addiction disrupts a marriage and causes separation or divorce. A spouse or partner of a loved one addicted to drugs can feel lonely, hopeless, distraught, or angry. The loved one only can focus on getting the next high and uses all the savings to get the drugs. Drug addiction leads to a cascade of problems in relationships, which subsequently resulted in the rapid growth of family riots.

Drug addiction gives birth to number of social evils like murder, dacoity, theft and rape as well. One who became addicted to drugs does not remain in a position to watch over his acts, an addicted sometimes commit above mentioned crimes which makes him/her guilt of criminal act if Intoxication is voluntarily and thus it also disrupt the life of addict as well his family. 

Drug addiction is treatable and starts with detox under medical supervision. Family and friends can begin the healing process through group therapy, counseling, and talking to others like religious preachers or meetings and drug addiction forums. Family and friends should listen to others who share their stories. People in NARANON groups or meetings are going through the same experience, Aware addict people with religious teachings as well. Never feel like you are alone with a drug addiction. Find encouragement from sober family and friends. In short, treat drug abusers like normal people don’t discourage them, give them pleasure by giving them company and don’t make them feel bad as this disease is a curable disease and can be cured by love and affection.
